Proud Mary – Sony Pictures has released the first trailer and poster for Proud Mary. The first trailer for action thriller Proud Mary, starring Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) as a hit woman. Action films focused on assassins have been popular fare in Hollywood for decades, and studios always seem to be looking for a new spin on the concept for a fresh take. Such movies have seen somewhat of a resurgence in recent years thanks to the stylings of John Wick, its sequel, John Wick: Chapter 2, and the still upcoming Atomic Blonde – all of which have inspired strong reactions among moviegoers.
Proud Mary – Action movie opens in 2018
The trailer introduces Taraji P. Henson as Mary, a famous woman who works for a criminal family in Boston, lives completely disappears when she meets A boy (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) passes when a professional hit goes bad. We only saw the boy for a moment when the trailer ended, but it looks like the killer put this boy on.
Proud Mary is a film that doesn’t have time revel in nuance and ambiguity regarding its aim. It’s a straight-up, intense, sexified action epic that mixes contemporary, post-John Wick, aesthetics with clear callbacks to the bygone 1970s era of Blaxploitation cinema, specifically the merciless gun-toting femme-fatale exploits of Pam Grier in classics like Coffy and Foxy Brown. The film’s newly-released trailer if proof of that notion.
The Proud Mary trailer offers very little explanation, nor does it seem to demand any. The clip follows Taraji P. Henson’s titular Mary, starting with a relaxing morning routine, accessing a boudoir-hidden personal armory filled with weapons tha rival that of any Kingsman member, quickly building to a high-impact montage of disguised intrigue, bullet-ridden car chases, murderous madness and, of course, an explosive crescendo; all while the eponymous soulful sounds of Ike & Tina Turner’s famous cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary” plays.
The supporting cast includes a bevy of talented performers including Billy Brown, Danny Glover, Neal McDonough, Xander Berkeley and Margaret Avery. Babak Najafi directs this action-thriller from a screenplay by Steve Antin, John Stuart Newman and Christian Swegal.
This film marks the American follow-up for director Babak Najafi, after taking the helm of last year’s action sequel London Has Fallen. The Iranian-born filmmaker has previously directed foreign films such as Sebbe and Easy Money II: Hard to Kill, starring Joel Kinnaman. He has also directed episodes of the hit Cinemax series Banshee, and one episode of the mini-series Banshee Origins

“Proud Mary” memorable role in the career of Taraji P. Henson
Action movies are not usually star vehicles for Hollywood actresses. Charlize Theron in “Atomic Blonde,” Angelina Jolie in “Salt” and Scarlett Johansson in “Lucy” are anomalies when they should be the standard, but Hollywood is slowly coming around to this fact. Case in point: “Proud Mary.” Never in a million years would the old Hollywood guard let the amazing Taraji P. Henson lead an action vehicle as a butt-kicking assassin, but it’s 2017 and we’re more than ready for this.
Taraji P. Henson is shaping up to have quite a big year in 2018, which will kick off with Proud Mary in January 2018, which she will follow up with her role in a new Tyler Perry film She’s Living My Life, which she co-stars in alongside Danielle Niccolet and Tika Sumpter, which hits theaters on March 30. Then she will voice Yesss, the owner of a trendy website in the Disney animated sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2. Her character was first introduced at the D23 Expo last weekend.
Proud Mary could become the most prominent starring role of Taraji P. Henson’s career. It’s the culmination of a career surge resulting from a powerful dramatic performance in the Oscar-nominated fact-based 2016 film Hidden Figures and her co-starring role on Fox’s primetime music industry soap opera Empire. She previous fielded television runs on Person of Interest, Boston Legal and The Division, also appearing in the remake of The Karate Kid.
